Welcome. Here you will find information about the two composition
courses I teach at Whatcom Community College. C. Day Lewis once wrote, "We write not in order to be
understood but in order to understand." This quest to understand the world around us
is very often the driving force behind celebrated writers--and results in stories that
contribute, challenge, and criticize cultural standards. My English 101 class is cornerstoned on American writers; we'll focus on their
interaction with American society and examine what element of understanding they
discovered and subsequently brought to our attention.
My English
102 class takes a slightly different tangent. By
exploring the evolution of story and fairy tales we can define cultural shifts in conflict
response. We can also see--by internalizing these stories and tales--our inner
selves more clearly.
In both classes, by engaging in written dialog we can
begin, as C. Day Lewis says, that process of writing "in order to
understand." Ironically, if we are successful, we can expect to become
discomforted and disillusioned, our old ideas shifting and even collapsing under new
scrutiny. However, the result is worthwhile. By digging deeply into cultural
consciousness, we root ourselves and find new paths that broaden and enhance our
existence. |
